Data Retention Policy for data gathered during the I am Echoborg show

Please take time to read the following information carefully and decide whether or not you wish any data that pertains to you to be retained by U-Soap Media Ltd.

What is I am Echoborg?

I am Echoborg is an evolving performance where members of the live audience can talk to an artificial intelligence. A host sets the audience a challenge: to discover the best possible outcome for relations between humans and intelligent machines. The AI though, seems to have another agenda. The content and tone of each show, as well as the ending, are different each time depending on the conversations that occur. This is a pioneering use of AI as a tool to deliver genuine audience agency in the creation of an experiential exploration of the impacts of automation on what it is to be human.

What forms of data are retained?

• 1. If you talk to the AI during the show a text file of your conversation is generated. U-Soap Media Ltd. securely stores this file. Any identifying data such as your name is removed from this file, thus the data is anonymised.
• 2. We may record the audio, video and still images of the show.

What are the data used for?

The anonymised transcripts are used to analyse and improve the show by the makers. Quotes, photos, audio clips or videos may be used by U-Soap Media to promote future shows or in future published articles, online use or presentations on the project. It is possible that your contribution will not be used. The data may be retained and published indefinitely and globally.

Who are the makers of I am Echoborg?

The data may be used by Rik Lander and Phil D Hall. They may assign access to others, such as video editors or authors, under the terms of use described above. Rik Lander is an artist who creates live events where audience members become players with agency over events in the story. He is also a Senior Lecturer at the University of the West of England, Bristol. Phil D Hall has been engaged in the definition and creation of commercially viable Conversational Artificial Intelligence for the last 16 years. I am Echoborg is a U-Soap Media production in association with Elzware Ltd.

Obtaining consent

We obtain informed consent from our contributors in a variety of ways depending on the circumstances of their contribution.

• 1. We will link to this document when we issue tickets or invitations to the performance so that you can make an informed decision on consent. We will announce any intension to record the event.
• 2. We will make an announcement at the start of a show that by participating in the performance contributors are giving their consent to be recorded and for their words to be recorded in the transcript.

Withholding consent

If you do not wish your words, image or sound to be recorded you can do the following:

• 1. It is up to individual audience members whether they speak to the AI.
• 2. For online events you can choose to turn your camera and mic off.
• 3. You may leave the performance at any time.

Withdrawal of consent

If you consent to being recorded, you can withdraw consent at any time up to three months from the date of the performance.
